BASIC OUTDOOR SKILLS DAY

On Saturday, September 28, 2002 we went to Sheriff's Lake Park to join about 95 other Girl Scouts for a fun day learning the first steps towards being good campers. We shared the park with many fine examples of Florida wildlife - ask any girl what she remembers most about the day and you'll probably hear the word "spider" in there somewhere!

Here are the skills we learned:

1. Learn how to choose a safe spot to build a fire and why hair should be tied up when working near fires.
Our instructor taught us how to choose a safe spot to build a fire: fires burn upward, so don’t ever build one under low or overhanging branches. Make sure the ground area is clear of things like leaves, dry grass, twigs, etc. The best place for fires is in designated fire rings or park stove. We learned lots of different ways to put a campfire out, and how important it is to stay outside the 'ring of safety'. Long hair should be in braids, or tied back to keep it from catching fire. (This is also good to do to keep hair out of the food when the girls cook). Everyone took turns demonstrating they know how to safely light a match without burning their fingers or dropping it where it can set fire to anything.

2. Learn first aid for a skinned knee and a bee sting.
After completing a first aid word search our girls went to work on trying to fit three different sized band-aids, a packet of antiseptic wipes and a large antibiotic ointment & swab packet into an empty film cannister to hang around their necks. It wasn't easy but by flexing those finger muscles everyone made it in the end!
The importance of preventing accidents was stressed, for instance, running may lead to skinned knees or disturbing bees may lead to being stung.
Amongst many other useful techniques and tips, "Grandma Judy" demonstrated the Heimlich manouevre for a choking person - luckily no one needed to use it at lunchtime, Mrs. K's Slop and the chocolate puddings slipped down easily!
