BACKYARD CAMPOUT

On Saturday, November 23, 2002 all the members of Troop 1819 invaded Mrs. Hensley's back yard with sleeping bags in tow. It was probably the coldest night of the year, and unfortunately the condensation in the tents was too bad for us to sleep outside, but that didn't stop us from doing all the other things associated with camping out.

First came the inevitable practical joke. Ms. Carrie brought out a bucket with potty seat attached and explained to the girls how they'd have to use it in the night if they needed to go to the bathroom. Comments were heard in some quarters to the effect of "I wonder if I can hold it all night", but others really got into the spirit of things as you can see from the picture!

We were very fortunate to have the Shuttle launch that night and it was absolutely spectacular. Mr. Hensley brought out his telescope so we could all see the moon, which was especially bright that night. He also demonstrated some modern camping and hiking gadgets such as a GPS system for finding out exactly where you are.

After cooking hot dogs on the campfire, we went inside to warm up and do some fun crafts, like making pictures from colorful dried leaves collected by Mrs. Pope.

Then it was back outside to play some games such as the hilarious "pile up" and "who's missing?" We munched on toasty smores until it was time to go indoors for the night, and drank hot chocolate and watched a movie before the leaders needed to lie down.... er, I mean until the girls were ready for bed.
All I can say is, it's a good job the Hensleys have such a huge porch!
